Ents of the River was inspired by the many American sycamores that grow along the water’s edge throughout the Connecticut River watershed, especially the Farmington River. During the CCPG’s first outing of the year, we painted at the Nancy Conklin Trail, part of the Farmington Land Trust. This tree immediately stood out to me as the Mother Tree of the area, the shining White Tree of Gondor: pure white, with patches of gray that shine blue in certain light. On later visits to other stretches of the river, I’ve learned that these trees often grow in the alluvial soils along major rivers and streams, offering shade for river wildlife and local fish. It became clear to me that these trees are stewards of the river, the watchers and caretakers of the streams. Ents of the River.
